A strong CV explains your skills; a portfolio lets an employer see them. Not every profession needs a large personal website. A sample spreadsheet, project description, design or anonymised report can be enough. When building a free CV, the aim is not to include as many links as possible. Select a few understandable examples that demonstrate skills relevant to the vacancy, and explain your own contribution rather than relying on a polished final image.
1. Match samples to the vacancy
Think about the daily tasks of the role you want. For an accounting position, a well-structured report may be more useful than an attractive poster. For a designer, composition and the user problem matter more. When choosing three strong samples, check that they are current and that you can explain how they were made. Show your specific contribution as well as the result. Do not present a team project as entirely your work; identify your responsibilities.
2. Explain each project briefly
Beside the portfolio link, describe the task, your role and the outcome in a few sentences. For example, you were asked to update a sales spreadsheet, removed duplicate entries and made searching easier. If the result was not measured, do not invent percentages. Explain what improved in straightforward language. Keep a short summary in your online CV and put the fuller description in the portfolio, allowing interested employers to explore the process without overcrowding your resume.
3. Remove confidential information
Do not share client names, phone numbers, financial figures or internal documents without permission. Anonymising a file involves more than deleting a name: metadata, hidden sheets and comments may retain information. If permission is unavailable, create your own practice example demonstrating the same skill and label it honestly as a personal exercise. Bank details and other people's resumes do not belong in a portfolio. When uncertain, agree what can be published with the responsible person first.
4. Test access to every link
Open the portfolio in a logged-out browser and on a phone. Access requests, deleted files and restricted cloud folders stop recruiters from seeing your work. Choose a format that does not require installing extra software. A link label should explain its destination; numerous shortened addresses make review harder. After downloading your CV, test the link in the PDF too. A link that works in the editor may not remain active after document export.
5. Create samples without employment experience
For a first job application, a university project, personal exercise or volunteer task can demonstrate ability. A sample stock spreadsheet for a small shop, a content plan or a simple program may show genuine skills. Do not describe practice work as a paid client project. State the task, tools used and what you learned. Its value depends less on complexity than on relevance to the vacancy and your ability to explain your decisions clearly.
6. Keep matching versions together
When applying for different roles, you can adjust the selection of relevant projects. If you plan to discuss a sample that is not in your CV, share it with the employer beforehand. Review old links and update dates. When creating a free CV with CVyukle, add your most relevant portfolio address rather than everything available. Save the submitted PDF and its matching portfolio selection together so you know what each employer received and can present your experience consistently.
Frequently asked questions
Does a portfolio require a personal website?
No. An accessible file or project page can work. Easy access, relevance and permission to share the material are more important.
What if I have no measured results?
Describe the work completed and the process that changed. Do not present an estimate as a measured outcome.
